The Mission of Planned Parenthood

Joycelyn Elders Prize

The Joycelyn Elders Prize for leftwing folly goes to Washington State Senator Patty Murray.

The Elders Prize, named in honor of Joycelyn Elders, surgeon general during the Clinton administration, is awarded as warranted to political and cultural figures who live up to her high standards of support for outlandish lefty ideals.  Elders had the liberals running for political cover as she advocated for abortion rights, condoms in schools, drug legalization, and more that would not be appropriate for this blog.

On January 31, 2012 the Susan G. Komen foundation withdrew funding from Planned Parenthood, the largest provider of abortions in America.  Senator Patty Murray was quick to come to the defense of the organization stating, “Planned Parenthood’s mission is to save lives…”  She went on to praise Planned Parenthood for doing “tremendous work across this country in providing preventative services so women don’t have to miss out on screenings and mammograms.”  She went on to blame the entire controversy on “a partisan witch hunt.”

Even if you support abortion, as Senator Murray does, only an outlandish liberal could claim with a straight face that the mission of the nation’s largest abortion provider is to save lives.  Senator Patty Murray you have more than earned this Joycelyn Elders Prize.

Locking Up Liberty

When I find myself agreeing with the ACLU I have to pause and reflect.  After several weeks of reading and contemplation I can say that it is not that I agree with the ACLU it is that we both agree that a new law is particularly dangerous and basic liberty is in danger.

On New Year’s Eve President Obama signed into law the National Defense Authorization Act for 2012 (NDAA) which allows indefinite detention of terrorists without trial.  The idea of jailing terrorists doesn’t bother me, but the idea that it would be indefinite and without a trial does bother me.  Someone might say, “Terrorists need to be arrested and who cares if they are held forever?”  But, I find myself wondering, if there is no trial, who decides if someone is a terrorist?

Am I a terrorist for questioning this law and the role of the military in the arrest, questioning and detention of American citizens?  Imagine the military showing up at your door.  They invite you to come with them to answer a few questions.  You’re sure it is all a misunderstanding and so you go with them telling your spouse that you’ll be back in a few hours.  The next thing you know you’re on a military base under guard and the interrogation isn’t going like you hoped it would.  They won’t let you go home and you don’t get your day in court.  According to the law as it now stands, you simply disappear.

The Guardian newspaper of Britain states that the law “allows the military to indefinitely detain without trial American terrorism suspects arrested on US soil who could then be shipped to Guantánamo Bay.”  The idea of an America citizen, even one suspected of terrorism, being arrested and then detained at Guantanamo without trial causes me to shudder.  Have our leaders forgotten that most basic concept of justice—innocent until proven guilty?

Administration officials deny that the law allows for the detention of American citizens, however, n an article titled Three myths about the detention bill, constitutional lawyer Glen Greenwald clearly refutes the government’s either naive or disingenuous position.  Greenwald states that the notion of Americans being exempt “is simply false, at least when expressed so definitively and without caveats. The bill is purposely muddled on this issue which is what is enabling the falsehood.”  He then quotes the law and examines the language to show American citizens could be detained without trial.

Conservatives and liberals are united as rarely before in their denunciation of this law.  Unfortunately, both Senators Maria Cantwell and Patty Murray from my home state of Washington and many others supported this breach of basic liberty.  The New York Times asked President Obama to veto NDAA, and then when he did not called the signing a “complete political cave-in, one that reinforces the impression of a fumbling presidency.”  I agree.

For reasons known only to the government, Lady Liberty has been arrested.  We don’t know why.  All the military will tell us is that she has been indefinitely detained.

The Real One Percent

The real greed that plagues American society is not on Wall Street or any other street where legal business is conducted, but it can be found on the streets of Washington D.C. Coupled with ever expanding legislative power and a lust for gain the greatest internal threat to America comes not from terrorism, but from the marble and granite halls of the Capitol building, White House and Supreme Court.

Using the capitalist system to strive for a better life is part of what has made this country great.  Warren Buffet, Bill Gates and the late Steve Jobs were great men in my opinion.  Their ability created jobs and wealth and helped make this nation great.  Another aspect of American greatness is that we are a nation of law.  If we find that those on Wall Street are profiting by unscrupulous means, the laws can be changed.  However, Martha Stewart went to jail for something that is perfectly legal for members of Congress.  Washington D.C. both makes the law and profits by it.  While it is immoral, it is perfectly legal for members of Congress to engage in insider trading.  Influence peddling is so common it is formalized and institutionalized within our government.  This confluence of money and power is a rot at the core of our nation.

Estimates vary, but many if not most members of Congress are millionaires.  Washington State’s senior senator, Patty Murray, is worth nearly a million and the junior senator, Maria Cantwell, is worth an estimated $6.2 million .  Despite that wealth they tax you to pay themselves an additional $174,000 a year.  Congressional leaders are paid even more.  The generous salary of Congress does not include the healthcare and other benefits they receive at your expense.  After serving in congress for a mere five years they can receive a pension.  If they serve 25 years they could receive a retirement pension equal to 80 percent of their salary.

Every living president is a multi-millionaire, but despite that wealth they tax you to pay them an additional $400,000 a year while in office.  Immediately after leaving office they receive retirement pay of nearly half that amount for life and up to an additional $150,000 each year in staff and office expenses.  Thus in retirement presidents receive yearly pay of about $350,000 a year.  This does not include healthcare and other benefits that also continue for life.  The salary of the vice president is $230,700

All of the Supreme Court justices may be millionaires, but at least seven of the nine have a net worth of a million or more.  Justices Kennedy and Roberts are the least wealthy, but with at least $350,000 in assets, they remain solidly in the top 1 percent of Americans.  Despite that wealth they tax you to pay themselves an additional $213,000 a year.  Justices often remain on the bench well past normal retirement age but, if they do retire, they are entitled to full pay for the remainder of their lives.

An adjusted gross income of $344,000 will put you in the top 1 percent of wage earners.  By those numbers even justices Kennedy and Roberts have made it to the top.  Because of their positions all these individuals have one thing that no Wall Street millionaire can rightfully claim—power, the right to create, administer or rule upon all the laws of this land.  That power makes the President, members of Congress and the courts the real 1 percent.

As the power of the government has grown, state capitols like Olympia and Salem have become the training camps for the major league avaricious and lust of Washington D.C.  Osama Bin Laden could never bring down this nation, but the political elites with their ever expanding need for your money and all power might destroy the Founders legacy and that is why this coming election is so very important.

Worn Out Tennis Shoes

Washington State Senator Patty Murray is in the political fight of her life. Early in her political career, she was told she couldn't make a difference because she was just a “mom in tennis shoes.” She has used the phrase to her benefit ever since.  However, with anti-incumbent sentiment high and a record of liberal legislation and big spending, she now finds herself in the political fight of her life.

If you live in Washington State, you have probably seen the television advertisement embedded here.  The sponsor of the ad is the American Action Network, headed by the former Republican senator from Minnesota, Norm Coleman.  The ad illustrates how over nearly twenty years in office Murray has evolved from a politically active mother, to an entrenched and out of touch politician.

Both Republican candidates Dino Rossi, a former state senator and gubernatorial candidate and Clint Didier, ex-NFL player and Tea Party favorite, are better choices for Washington State.

Good, Bad and Ugly in Healthcare

As a responsible citizen, I have been trying to learn as much as I can about President Obama’s proposed healthcare reform plan. I guess that means I’m more informed than a few of our elected officials.

As I found out more about the plan, I liked it less. As you may have guessed, I’m not the type to suffer in silence, so I told my congressman, Brian Baird, and my Senators, Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell that I had a few nonnegotiable positions on healthcare. Here they are.

· The healthcare plan congress adopts for me must be the healthcare plan senators and congressional representatives adopt for themselves. Why should I accept a plan that my elected representatives are unwilling to use?

· My doctor and I make my healthcare decisions. I don’t want some bureaucrat with a high school diploma telling my doctor what treatments I am allowed.

· No rationing of healthcare. I’m old enough that I do not want a plan that rations care for seniors or anyone else. If someone needs a procedure, they should be able to get it. No one should wait for month or years.

· No giant government healthcare agency that sucks up tax dollars like a sponge. The last thing this nation needs is a new federal agency with a host of new bureaucrats to run it.

· No new taxes on anyone. Taxes reduce financial viability. This is not the time to be putting brakes on economic growth.

· No funding of abortion. Abortion is killing. Medicine should be about saving lives.

· No tax dollars to provide healthcare for illegal aliens. Sure, cover every citizen and any noncitizen here legally, but not one dollar for anyone here illegally.

If congress believes that healthcare reform is needed they should design a plan. However, all members of congress should take the time to read it, hold town hall meetings and give their constituents time to analyze and discuss it. What is the hurry President Obama?
