Still Looking

Of the current candidates, it is clear to me that the Republican establishment would prefer either Perry or Romney.  Rick Perry talks the conservative talk, but is in many ways a crony capitalist-big government Republican.  Mitt Romney is a RINO Republican.  Either would be better than Barack Obama, but neither is my ideal candidate so, I’m still looking.  One man often mentioned in conservative circles is the former chairman and CEO of Godfather's Pizza, Herman Cain.

Cain created significant media buzz when, just days ago, he scored a surprise win in a Republican presidential straw poll in Florida.  Perhaps Florida Republicans liked that his political positions were clear and, unlike Romney’s, have remained consistent.  There are many positions where we agree.  Cain is pro-life, supports traditional marriage, opposes any increase in the debt ceiling and supports free market solutions for Social Security.  However, his support of the TARP bailouts and some of his tax ideas give me pause.

Cain has said that he supports the Second Amendment, but that gun control should be left to the states.  I hope that Cain modifies this position to come more in line with recent Supreme Court rulings.  In McDonald v. Chicago, the Supreme Court held that there was an individual right to keep and bear arms and that the Second Amendment applied to the states.  States may not overly regulate gun ownership.

Overall, Cain merits more attention than he is getting from the media.  Keep talking Herman Cain; I’m interested and still looking for the candidate to support.
