Email Scam

A friend, or someone you know, has gone on a trip and somehow lost all their money and they need your help.  My wife recently got such an email from a friend in another state.  The email said our friend had been robbed and needed money to get back home.  We did some checking.  It was a scam.

While this scam has been around for years it appears to be growing in popularity among con artists. This may surpass the Nigerian bank scam as a popular con.  Not only has my wife received such an email, but at least two political candidates from the region have had their email accounts hacked and bogus appeals for money sent out in their names.  The latest is conservative Republican Bill Turlay, candidate for Vancouver city council.

Fellow blogger Lew Waters reports that he contacted Turlay and he is not the author of the email and has not been in Spain as it stated.  It is tempting to believe that this is some ploy of the liberals, but the bad grammar in the email leads me to think otherwise.  You can read the entire email and get Lew’s thoughts on it on his blog, Clark County Conservative.
