Helping Illegals to Succeed

The Oregon Senate is following the lead of Washington, California and a few other states in giving illegal aliens lower tuition rates that are denied to U.S. citizens.  Oregon Senate Bill 742 would allow illegal alien students to receive in-state tuition at public colleges and universities.  That would mean that an illegal alien from Mexico would pay lower tuition than a United States citizen from another state.  The difference between in-state and out-of-state tuition at the University of Oregon is $8,190 compared to $25,000.  Therefore, Oregon taxpayers would be substantially subsidizing the education of these alien adults (college students are typically 18 or older) but, upon graduation, they still could not legally work in the country.

The other states where illegal aliens can get in-state tuition are, Texas, Oklahoma, New York, California, Nebraska, Kansas, Utah, Illinois, New Mexico and Washington.  Lawmakers in bankrupt California have proposed offering scholarships and financial aid to illegal alien students.  Like California, many of these states face massive budget deficits, but the politicians are eager to give away your tax dollars.

Speaking at a town hall event in Washington D.C. sponsored by the Spanish-language network Univsion, President Obama recently told a woman who had received a deportation letter that he wanted her “to succeed.”  He said, “We have redesigned our enforcement practices under the law to make sure that we're focusing primarily on criminals, and so our deportation of criminals are up about 70 percent. Our deportation of non-criminals are down, and that's because we want to focus our resources on those folks who are destructive to the community.  And for a young person like that young woman that we just spoke to who's going to school, doing all the right things, we want them to succeed.”

The woman is not doing “all the right things,” she is in this country illegally.  Video of the President’s Univision remarks has been removed from YouTube.  Before it was removed many blogs and some news outlets, such as Fox News, reported the story but now, all the links I to the video I could find were broken.  Perhaps some in the Obama administration do not wish the “we want them to succeed” message going viral on the Internet.
