Happy Halloween
Monday, October 31, 2011 at 9:11PM Despite all the hot air about global warming coming from Al Gore, the winter chill is setting in. In Eek Alaska, where I teach, that is especially true. A white blanket of snow covers the ground and the lakes are frozen. But, the Yup’ik Eskimos who populate this region are not deterred by cold. Halloween is a big holiday here. A good friend took this picture at the school costume party on Friday. (Click on the picture to see a larger image.) I didn’t win.

This village often reminds me of a time gone by. Halloween is one such time. Tonight all the children are trick or treating from one end of the village to the other. While the parents of the very young children tag along after a few years, the kids go from house to house collecting candy by themselves. They children know everyone and everyone knows them. The village for them is a safe and comfortable place.
Tonight is a fun night for the kids. Tomorrow will be a challenging day for teachers. Happy Halloween.

Happy Halloween to you, too!
I have been enjoying your blog for a while now. Thank you. I live in SW Washington State and found you while searching for NW political blogs.
I spent two weeks in Alaska, including some time in Barrow, when I was ten, was enthralled, and have never been back. Next year in Jerusalem (or Barrow) perhaps!
Love your costume, btw.
Thank you. I'm glad you enjoy the blog. I hope to continue it, and improve it, in the years to come.
