Helen Thomas – Bigot
Sunday, June 6, 2010 at 6:46PM Helen Thomas, the dean of the White House press corps is a liberal by her own admission. In 2006 she stated, “I was born a liberal, and I will be a liberal ’til the day I die.” What she will not admit and what the mainstream liberal media will not confront is that Thomas is a bigot.
The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines a bigot as someone “who regards or treats the members of a group (as a racial or ethnic group) with hatred and intolerance.” Recently when asking a question about the Gaza Freedom Flotilla she described Israel’s actions as a, “deliberate massacre, an international crime.” But she used even more callous language at a May 27th Jewish Heritage celebration at the White House. At that celebration, Helen Thomas stated that Jews should, “get the hell out of Palestine,” and go back to Poland and Germany. Below is the full text and video of what she said that day.
Rabbi Nessenoff: Any comments on Israel? We’re asking everbybody today, any comments on Israel?
Helen Thomas: Tell em to get the hell out of Palestine.
Nessenoff: Oh. Any better comments on Israel?
Thomas: (laughing) Remember, these people are occupied, and it’s their land. Not German, it’s not Poland.
Nessenoff: So where should they go and what should they do?
Thomas: They should go home!
Nessenoff: Where’s their home?
Thomas: Poland. Germany.
Nessenoff: So you’re saying the Jews should go back to Poland and Germany?
Thomas: And America and everywhere else.
The hurtful, hateful and intolerance language of Helen Thomas for a people attempting to regain and rebuild their ancient homeland qualifies as bigotry.

Effective June 7th, Helen Thomas has retired, but really, it was more of a resignation. I believe two trends worked together to bring an end to her career. Called the dean of the White House press corps because of her decades of work, her junior colleagues would be reluctant to censure her. I believe she felt immune to criticism. The second trend that caught her was the changing media itself. Thomas is 89 years old. Youtube, where the video of her comments went viral is probably as alien to her as the typewriter is a rookie report today. I don’t think she ever thought her comments would have an audience.
