Actors Show their True Colors
Monday, August 3, 2009 at 6:14PM When I buy a ticket to see a movie I don’t care if the actors and actresses are liberal lightweights as long as they do their job well. I’m paying them for their acting ability and that is the beginning and the end of our relationship. I might listen to them if they were talking about reform in the entertainment industry, but I ignore them when they pontificate about global warming or how we need government run healthcare.
Don’t get me wrong, even self-important Hollywood liberals have a right to speak, but most of them are ardent leftists who know little about politics and policy. Why should I listen to them?
However, movie stars fascinate many people in this country so, when they show their true colors, I feel the need to point it out. Puerto Rican Actor Benicio del Toro, who I had never heard of before today, accepted a brand new Cuban government award in Havana recently in honor of his portrayal of Ernesto “Che” Guevara, a failed communist guerilla in the 2008 movie, “Che.” I probably would have still ignored this story, but he brought his friends along, actors Robert Duval, James Caan and Bill Murray, who entertained the audience by singing, As Time Goes By.”
The movie “Che” is a nearly five-hour long propaganda film which one critic described as “painfully dull.” I’m will never see it, the fact that it was a big hit in communist Cuba tells me more than I need to know. The fact that Robert Duval, James Caan and Bill Murray, wanted to be part of an awards ceremony for Benicio del Toro and the movie “Che,” tells me all I need to know about them.
